Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Team Against India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected inclusion.

Recent Form Result in Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a answer to their top-order woes.

Bowling Additions and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
